What are TV wall mounts?

A TV Wall Mount is an accessory that allows you to mount your TV at the height of choice, without the need for a TV cart or a table that takes on so much valuable space. Especially for people living on a small apartment, or for all those who want to maximize their TV enjoyment (and who doesn’t), TV wall mounts are extremely useful, a little investment you should add whenever you purchase a new flat TV set.

Even though TV wall mounts come in different shapes and sizes the, typical universal TV wall mounts for flat panel displays have the same basic parts: a wall plate that attaches to the wall or entertainment center, and rails attached to the back of the TV set. The rails usually consist of two perpendicular arms with back-facing devices that get connected to the wall plate. These rails are made to use predrilled holes in the rear of the display.

After having the rails and plate installed, you simply hand the TV on the wall plate. To optimize visibility, it can be moved left or right across the length of the wall plate. This beats old TV carts since in every corner of the room you’ll be able to watch TV comfortably without making the effort to move around a large piece of furniture. And even if the TV had to be removed, you can always easily lift it off the TV wall mount.

Every standard TV wall mount is designed to keep a flat screen display within one inch (25 mm) of the wall. And you shouldn’t worry about safety, since TV wall mounts are made from steel and constructed to hold specific ranges of weight. You’ll find the appropriate easily, since it is usually defined by screen size. For example, while a basic flat panel wall mount can be rated for 26-42 inch (66-107 cm), and displays with a maximum weight of 100 pounds (45 kilograms), the next type can be for 42-50 inch (107-127 cm), displays with a maximum weight of 150 pounds (68 kg).

Different types of TV wall mounts

You can choose among three basic designs of TV wall mounts for mounting your flat TV on the wall.

- A low profile TV wall mount will keep your TV set as close to the wall as possible, while hiding unsightly cables quite well.

- A tilt TV wall mount gives you the possibility to tilt downward for better viewing angles when mounting the TV up higher than eye level. They usually tilt down about 15 degrees or so and the TV sets about 4? from the wall. They are ideal for using over a fireplace.

- A swivel TV wall mount is great in case you’ve got a wall that doesn’t have an open corner where the side of the TV is visible. They are ideal for mounting TV sets in kitchens, bedrooms and offices, because of their flexibility of angling the TV for the viewing position.

- A motorized wall mount, in case you can afford it, will optimize your home theater by allowing you to rotate the TV for an optimum viewing angle with the touch of a remote button.

Some reasons for purchasing TV wall mounts

TV wall mounts were optional for the old technology, but with the new flat TV sets, they are a must! Consider that mounting your flat TV will not only provide an optimum viewing, but will also make a lot aesthetically. Think how much better your room would look! TV wall mounts are a way of saving space: forget about that awful box that would take half the space available in the living room, today your new flat TV will look just as a picture on the wall.

But that’s not all! Think that new television sets come in large sizes. Putting your new flat TV on a table or cart is risky, since with your children or pets playing near an accident can happen anytime. And even if only adults live at home, people passing through can accidentally push the TV set just a little... enough to see them tumbling down to the floor and ruining your significant investment in home entertainment. If you are lucky to have your TV set insured, you would still be without TV for some days, not to mention most companies will only ensure the TV at a very high price. TV wall mounts sound as the logical choice now, don’t they?

How to make the right choice

When the time comes for buying your TV wall mount, consider the following things:

- The size of your TV: As we explained before, there are different wall mounts for each TV size, based on the screen size as well as the range of weight they can support.

- The type of wall: It’s not the same mounting the TV on a wall with wood studding than on solid concrete or cinder block, in where you should use concrete anchors for a secure connection.

- Where to mount your TV: Depending on the location of choice, you’ll pick among the different TV wall mount designs. Remember to leave enough room for your center speaker and front speakers of your sound system.

No matter which design you choose, TV wall mounts will certainly turn your home theater in a major attraction.
