The Secret Of Eye Catching Headlines
86
So You Want To Know THE SECRET huh???
Well, then!! Since you're here, you're a smart cookie!
People that know how to craft a good headline can attract attention to their writing. If you attract attention, you can attract traffic. And traffic helps you sell more of your product, service or point of view.
Isn't that what we all want? Maybe? Maybe not?
Whatever it is, let's give you THE SECRET to writing EYE CATCHING HEADLINES by the time you finish reading this hub!!
One thing I've noticed time and time again when something catches my eye is that a good headline almost always triggers an EMOTIONAL response. Like, "What is THAT?!?" or "Say what?"
So this is.....
Recommendation Number One: Appeal To The Emotions!
You can think logically, that's fine and dandy. But if I read it and skip over then it probably didn't do squat for me...meaning....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
That's what's going on in the reader's head. Let's dive right in and take on an example.
Let's say you've got a hub/product/service about dieting. Which one of these draws you in?
Lose Ten Pounds Using A Diet Plan - (This one might sound generic and plain since a lot of diet headlines sound kinda like this)
Slim Waist, Toned Thighs, Hot Butt: Supermodel Slimming Techniques - (Is this better? Does it make you curious to read on?)
Now I'm no super expert on this BUT I do know what catches my eye. I'd be very curious to find out what this is about.
The trick is in knowing who the audience is. And involving some emotion/words in there which appeal to this audience. Make sense?
Recommendation Number Two: Use EMOTIONAL words!
If you're helping people out with an emotional need or want, and it really addresses and helps them they'll want to help you out right back by buying your product, service, or reading your hub(wink wink)! BUT, if you're not directly ADDRESSING the emotions that person is dealing with, they skip it.
Here's some examples:
How To Give her the OOhhhhhh Myyyyy Gooddddd Orgasm!
Key word - Orgasm or even OOhhhhhh Myyyyy Gooddddd
Simple Tips For Never Looking Stupid Or Awkward In Front Of Girls Or Guys
Key word - Awkward or Looking Stupid
Feel Sexy: Master Kissing Tips So They'll Always Remember YOU
Key word - Feel Sexy
Recommendation Number Three: Sound Like A Person
This one's pretty important. When you talk with a friend or family member your tone of voice or altogether communication might be different compared with someone you may not necessarily know. Of course this isn't set in stone. Social butterflies can be the exception here, but I digress.
Don't sound like a salesman dude. Lighten it up. Don't be formal.
People can relate to people. People like relating to other people. But if you sound like you're like a computer or something........seeeya, buuu-byye.
That make any sense to you?
Ideas For Headlines
There's lots of places to check out for headlines.
Craiglist is free and some of the best headlines come directly from the Personal ads. Have you seen some of those things? There are some real classics there. You've got women seeking men, men seeking women, and then the extra stuff. Now these people are trying to catch ATTENTION with THEIR HEADLINE. And they're using every trick in the book, as allowed by Craigslist of course. Usually you'll have your bland, 21 y/o SWF seeking SWM, but it does target a specific audience and cuts right to the chase. But you'll have your creative headliners too.
Tabloid Magazines. Usually these will relate with celebrities and stuff so you'll get some interesting ones here and there. These people get paid to make eye catching stuff so you'll buy the mag and read up on the latest gossip. Did Oprah gain weight? Who's the newest hot celebrity in Hollywood now? What did so and so wear to the awards show?
National Enquirer. For some really out of this world stuff this is one publication that can bring out some creative ideas to the table. Some articles in there really are "Out Of This World"...like aliens and crazy stuff. From encounters of the third kind to strange creatures like Bigfoot found in.......New Jersey?!?! But hey, it's pretty eye catching stuff, lemme tell ya!
Templates
There are tons of templates and words which work very well. You can find them all over the internet. But the one thing I'm hoping to convey to you in this hub is the emotion to the whole thing and using THAT as the main component before coming up with that sizzling headline.
Template like:
The Secret Way To (BLANK)
- The Secret Way To Do Math In Your Head
- The Secret Way To Effective Time Management
Templates can save a lot of time and energy since all you have to do is plug in a few words. HOWEVER, just remember recommendation two and three. Templates can work, BUT how about plugging in the emotions, like so:
- Feel Like A Genius! The Secret Way To Do Math In Your Head
- Less Stress, Less Headaches And Less Work. The Secret To Effective Time Management
All I did was add an emotional statement in the front of each sentence.
How's that?
Summing It All Up
So it's the end of the hub and the main point of eye catching emotions is Emotion. Emotion. Emotion. All while using these three recommendations.
Here's to your success with some creative, sizzling hot, eye candy headlines!! Hope you like these tips!

Fantastic tips. I especially like the tip - involve emotions. That's one of the things I advise my clients so often, and get blank faces. I tell them, "Tonight, when you are watching the telly, don't switch channels during the ad breaks. Instead watch the ads, and try to identify the emotion used in a few of them." They find this exercise very useful.
Well-written useful HubPage full of interesting titbits, um, I mean tid-bits!
Great tips ... I'm an ad copywriter myself, and focusing on the emotional appeal is excellent guidance. I also wrote a hub about headlines, so check it out if you have a chance. Great hub. And, yes, the classifieds always have a wealth of great ideas.
Great Hub ! Loved it.
Thanks
